Joseph P. Matz

Joseph P. Matz Sr., 81, of Drums, passed away late Sunday evening, February 20, 2022 at Lehigh Valley Hospital - Hazleton, following a short illness.

Born in Hazleton, January 11, 1941, he was the son of the late Guiseppe and Christina (Longo) Matz and spent the past 17 years in Drums, after moving from Hazleton.

Joseph was a retired Electrician for PPL, having retired in 2003. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He was a member of Most Precious Blood RC Church, Hazleton. Joseph was also a member of the Hazleton Area Quarterback Club, and the PPL Golf League, at Edgewood. He was a past member of the Knights of Columbus, West Hazleton. He was an avid sports fan, especially PSU Football, and NY Yankees Baseball. An avid golfer, Joseph was particularly proud of achieving two hole in ones both at the number seven hole at Edgewood. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by two sisters Domenica Poproc and Jean Vito.

Surviving are his wife, the former Alice Morris, to whom he was married on May 28, 1966; two children Joseph Matz, Jr, and his wife Cindy, Drums; and Melissa Stauffer and her husband Greg, Drums; three grandchildren Miranda and Marcus Matz, and Noah Stauffer; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 25, 2022 at Noon in Harman Funeral Homes & Crematory, Inc. (East) 669 W. Butler Drive, Drums. Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday morning from 11:30 am until the time of service. The family requests that all persons attending the services, please wear a mask.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Greater Pennsylvania Chapter of the Alzheimer Association.
