Jerome Alvin Leichtman, 92, passed away on Thursday, May 17, 2018 at Providence Place, Drums.
He was born in Hazleton to the late Ruth and Milton J. Leichtman.
He attended Penn State University, and he was President of Leichtman's Ice Cream Company: the last consecutively family owned ice cream company in the United States. He resided in the Hazleton area his entire life. He was in the Navy and was a World War II veteran.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Dean, sister Helen Betty Pinkus, daughter Tracy, step children, Margaret Haentjens Stone, and Grove Dean Haentjens.
He leaves behind his children, daughter, Carrie, son, David, brother Jay and his wife Kathy, stepson Walter Haentjens, Jr., step grandchildren, Nicole Haentjens Traore, Walter Haentjens lll, Laurence Parker Stone, and Carver Haentjens Stone. He is also survived by five step great-grandchildren who visited him frequently and loved him dearly.
Jerry and his wife Nancy were married on May 20, 1972, and lived a wonderful life together. They traveled, hosted dinner parties, played tennis, and watched baseball together. Jerry especially enjoyed fishing on the St. Lawrence River and taking his wife on trips.
“Jer” is remembered for the joy he brought to people through his sense of humor. On countless occasions, we as a family cried with laughter as “Leichtman” did something goofy, delivered a one liner probably sprinkled with a curse word or two, or dressed in an impromptu costume. Now we cry with mourning with his passing, but are grateful for laughter filled memories, and that he may be at Nancy’s side again.
His funeral will be held privately later this summer at the convenience of the family. Harman Funeral Homes & Crematory Inc. (East) 669 W. Butler Drive, Drums is assisting the family with the arrangements. Condolences can be entered and more information is available at www.harmanfuneral.com.
