Irene M. Zubrod, 99, formerly of Hazleton, passed away Thursday afternoon, February 29, 2024, at Mountain Top Health Care and Rehabilitation Center in Mountain Top.
Born in Freeland, May 7, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Anna (Curney) Popovec and spent the past three years in Mountain Top, after moving from Hazleton.
Irene studied to be a hairdresser after graduating from Saint Ann's High School in Freeland. She had also worked as a very proficient presser for Glassberg Dress Factory, Hazleton and Aloha Frocks, West Hazleton. Irene and her husband Bill were members of Saint John Bosco Roman Catholic Church, Sugarloaf.
Every holiday and many weekends in between, Irene made perogies, nut bread, and fudge to share. She and her husband enjoyed going out, bringing treats for all their friends. Since she and her husband built their home Irene took great pride in keeping it clean and neat. Irene was loved by her family, neighbors, and friends.
She was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by her loving husband of 60 years, William "Bill" Zubrod who she married July 24, 1961, until his passing July 7, 2019; a daughter, Dolores Auntcliff who passed away in 2010, and a brother, Thomas Popovec, Sr. who passed in 2006.
Surviving are three nephews, Thomas Popovec, Jr., Grand Island, NY; Joseph Popovec and his wife Linda, Houston, TX; and Stephen Popovec, Colorado Springs, CO; sister-in-law, Regina Popovec, Tonawanda, NY; and friends, Bob Ritz and his wife Dottie, Sugarloaf.
Her funeral will be held with a Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, March 6, 2024 at 10 AM in Saint John Bosco Roman Catholic Church, 573 PA-93, Sugarloaf. Burial will follow in Calvary Roman Catholic Cemetery, Drums. Friends may call at the church on Wednesday morning from 9 AM-10 AM.
