Elizabeth Smith Obituary

Elizabeth “Betty” Jane Smith, 89, of Myrtle Beach, SC passed away on Saturday, June 27, 2020 in Little River, SC.

Betty’s parents were Arthur Franklin and Emily Beatrice (Greenley) Smith. She was born October 8, 1930 in Miners Mill, PA, a part of Wilkes-Barre. She graduated from Kingston Township High School in 1948. She married her high school sweetheart, Clinton A. Smith on September 2, 1950.

After high school, she worked as a bookkeeper at the Boston Store in Wilkes-Barre. Not long after getting married she and Clint moved to Arlington, VA. She then worked at the Navy Department that was located on the National Mall where the Vietnam War Memorial is now located.

When Clint received his draft notice from the Army in December of 1951, she and 2 other wives drove across country to see their husbands off in San Francisco. She returned to Northern Virginia to wait for Clint to return from Korea.

Betty worked as a bookkeeper for the majority of her working career, but she was also a professional seamstress and tailor. The sewing supplemented the family income while the children were young. She and Clint founded a General Contracting Company and were involved in other successful ventures until their retirement in 1995.

Betty and her husband were active charter members of Hope Lutheran Church in Annandale, VA. In the Myrtle Beach area, they were active first at Shepherd of the Sea Lutheran Church and then St. Philip Lutheran Church.

Throughout her life, Betty enjoyed any kind of needle work and crafts, traveling to many places, visiting with family, friends, neighbors, and church members. She also loved learning and took a variety of college and community courses.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband of almost 70 years, Clint Smith, and her only brother, R. Donald Smith.

Betty is survived by her three children, Judith R. Korfonta (Michael) of Springfield, VA; Clinton G. Smith (Rebecca, deceased) and Steven A. Smith (Teresa Elston) of Myrtle Beach; grandchildren, Janette N. Cañete (Jonathan) of Danville, VA; Kathryn E. Korfonta of Alexandria, VA; Aaron B. Smith (Sandy Gordon) of Brooklyn, NY; Sarah F. Schmitt (Adam) of Falls Church, VA; Jennifer E. Smith of Myrtle Beach; and Jeremy D. Smith (Erica O’Neill) also of Myrtle Beach; Kristen M. Korfonta (Andrew Hutton) of Springfield, VA; and great grandson, Dominic A. Cañete of Danville, VA.

Betty will be laid to rest Saturday, July 11, 2020 at 2pm in St. John’s Lutheran and UCC Cemetery, 770 St. Johns Road, Drums, PA 18222.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to St. Philip Lutheran Church, 6200 North Kings Highway, Myrtle Beach SC 29572.
