Robert Cherenyack Obituary

Robert Joseph Cherenyack, 82, of Sugarloaf, passed away peacefully on Friday morning, May 15, 2026, at his home, surrounded by his loving family after an extended illness. A man of deep faith, tireless dedication, and generous spirit, Bob touched the lives of all who knew him.

Born in Hazleton on April 27, 1944, he was the beloved son of the late Paul and Elizabeth (Jadush) Cherenyack. He was raised in Hazleton, PA, and spent the past 48 years in Sugarloaf. Bob was a proud 1962 graduate of Hazleton High School, and served with honor in the United States Navy from 1962 to 1966.

Bob devoted 32 years to Pennsylvania Power and Light, including a long tenure at the Berwick power plant. He served many roles from lineman, union representative and engineer.  His strong work ethic earned him the deep respect of his colleagues.

That same spirit of service extended well beyond the workplace. Bob was a devoted member of St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church in Hazleton, where his faith was the cornerstone of his life. He lent his voice to the parish choir, sharing his love of worship through song.

Bob was equally committed to his community. He was a proud and longstanding member of the Knights of Columbus #8613, Our Lady of Fatima Council, where he served in numerous leadership roles over many years, rising to the distinguished position of Pennsylvania State Deputy — a testament to the trust and admiration he inspired in those around him. He was also a valued member of Valley Vets Post #8161, and served his neighbors faithfully on the Conyngham Borough Zoning Board.

Bob was a big fan of the Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles, a lover of polka music, a golfer and a talented mechanic who enjoyed working on his cars. He found joy in life's simple pleasures and shared that joy freely.

In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his son, Christopher P. Cherenyack.

He is survived by his devoted wife of more than 55 years, Maureen (Myers) Cherenyack; his daughter, Kimberly Rayer and her husband Thomas, of Wayne; two grandsons, Alexander and Tyler, of Wayne; his twin sister, Elizabeth Ann Hudock, of White Haven; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be held on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at 11:00 AM, with Divine Liturgy and the Office of Christian Burial at St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church, 5 E. 20th St., Hazleton, PA 18201.
