Robert E. Brubaker, 81, of Black Creek Township, passed away Sunday afternoon, September 24, 2023, at Glen Brook Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Berwick.
Born in Huntingdon, July 14, 1942, he was the son of the late The Rev. D. Owen and Ruth Naomi (Drake) Brubaker and spent the past 54 years in Black Creek Township, after moving from Conyngham.
Robert was a graduate of Hazleton High School, class of 1960. He also graduated from West Chester University with a BS and MS in Education. He was a music teacher in the Hazleton Area School District for 35 years. Bob was also the Hazleton Area High School Assistant Band Director and the West Hazleton Junior High School Assistant Wrestling Coach. He also taught at Holy Family Academy and private music lessons.
After retiring from teaching, he worked for several years for Spherion Temp Agency. He enjoyed meeting new people and learning factory procedures.
He played with Mahanoy City American Legion Band, Hazleton Philharmonic, Hazleton Liberty Band, and Freeland St. Ann's Band, which he directed for two years.
He was a member of Valley Vocals and director of Hazleton Barbershoppers, president of Hazleton Chess Club, and a member of Anthracite Model Railroad Club. He played the reed organ at Brainerd Church for many years.
Bob volunteered with the Hazleton Chapter of the American Red Cross and with Horses and Horizons. He was an avid geocacher, with the handle BRUB2.
He was a member of Black Creek United Methodist Church, where he sang with and directed the choir and was a substitute organist.
Surviving is his loving wife of 58 years, the former Joan L. Wurzel; four children, Carl Brubaker, King of Prussia; Pamela Perron, Erie; Sharon Riffer and her husband Courtney, East Vandergrift; and Thomas Brubaker, Dallas; two grandchildren, Jacob Riffer, and Will Perron; two sisters Linda Pflugrad and husband Alan, Columbia, MD; and Jan Zerfoss, Denver; a nephew, nieces and great-nieces.
His funeral will be held with a Memorial Service on Friday, October 6, 2023 at 11 AM in Black Creek United Methodist Church, 158 Golf Course Rd, Sugarloaf. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Friday morning from 9 AM until the time of the service. Harman FH & Crematory Inc. (West), 1265 Rock Glen Road, Rock Glen is assisting the family with the arrangements.
