Richard "Dick" Adams Cummins, 83, of Sugarloaf, passed away Tuesday afternoon, January 16, 2024, at Lehigh Valley Hospital - Hazleton in Hazleton, following a lengthy illness.
Born in Coatesville, January 2, 1941, he was the son of the late Stanley John and Bessie Mae "Skip" (Adams) Cummins and spent the past 60 years in Sugarloaf, after moving from Coatesville.
Dick was a Pennsylvania State Trooper for 30 years, having retired in 1992. In 1994 he started work at the Keystone Job Corps as a Security Guard and retired in 2009. He had worked at Troop N in Hazleton, Bloomsburg, and Fern Ridge, and had retired from Troop S, patrolling Pennsylvania's Interstate Systems. He was a US Marine Corps veteran having served from 1958 - 1961 and attained the rank of Corporal. He attended St. Peter's Church, Hazleton. He was a member of the American Legion, Fraternal Order of Police, and the Retired State Police Association of Pennsylvania.
Dick loved military history and would read numerous books and watch documentaries on the subject. He was an avid reader, with a deep appreciation of art and sketching. A natural athlete, he participated in discus, shot put, baseball, basketball, and football. Dick had a great love for animals, taking care of many cats over the years that gravitated to him. He was a very tough individual but also had a soft side.
Surviving are his loving wife, the former Carolyn Myers to whom he was married on November 9, 1963 in Coatesville after meeting in the second grade; a son Bryan Edward Cummins, Millersville; and a brother-in-law, Edward Smith Myers and his companion Jose Arranda, Philadelphia.
Military rites will be accorded on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, at 8 PM from Harman Funeral Homes & Crematory Inc. (East), 669 West Butler Drive, Drums. Interment will take place privately at the convenience of the family. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 PM for a Memorial Visitation.
