Mildred Elsie Krzywicki, 97, of West Hazleton, passed away Thursday morning, June 29, 2023, following a brief illness.
Born in Hazleton, January 22, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Alexandra (Morgownick) Krzywicki and spent the past 47 years in West Hazleton, after moving from Philadelphia.
Mildred grew up in Drums and was a 1943 graduate of Hazleton High School. After high school she completed the nursing program at Hazleton General Hospital and became a Registered Nurse. She was a member of Sigma Theta Tau, the National Honorary Society of Nursing. To continue her education, she moved to Philadelphia and earned her bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. She remained in Philadelphia and was employed as a Registered Nurse for Philadelphia General Hospital for over 20 years. After returning to the Hazleton area, she worked at the Pottsville General Hospital for twelve years. Mildred also taught nursing at Hazleton General Hospital and Wilkes University. She was a member of Good Shepherd Roman Catholic Church, Drums.
Mildred remained active after retiring. She taught CCD classes, was a member of the Hazleton Art League, was a regular swimmer at the YMCA and volunteered at Eckley Miners' Village and Red Cross blood drives.
She was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by her brothers Joseph and Anthony Krzywicki, sisters, Bertha Daniels, Helen Krzywicki, and Genevieve Straw, and a nephew, Anthony Straw.
Surviving are her nieces and nephews: Joanne Krzywicki, PA; Dolores "Dee" Mikita, PA; Sue Shatto, PA; Clausen "Corky" Krzywicki, VA; Robert "Bobby" Krzywicki, VA; Van Krzywicki, NY; Christopher Straw, DE; Andrew Straw, NC; and Joseph Straw, PA.
Her funeral will be held with a Memorial Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, July 27 at 11 am in Good Shepherd RC Church, 87 S. Hunter Hwy, Drums. Interment will follow in Calvary RC Cemetery, Drums. Friends may call at the church from 10 am until the time of the Mass.
