Leonard H. Smoyer Jr., 69, of Berwick, passed away Tuesday evening, August 11, 2020, at Mountain City Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Hazle Township, following a three-month illness.
Born in Bloomsburg, March 19, 1951, he was the son of the late Leonard and Thelma (Baker) Smoyer, Sr. and spent the past four years in Berwick, after moving from Beaver Township.
Leonard was an English teacher for Forbes Road High School, Waterfall and a substitute teacher at numerous schools in Columbia County. He was also a self-employed salesman for many years. He was a member of Glad Tidings Assembly of God, Bloomsburg. He was also a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity during his time at Lycoming College where he had a wrestling scholarship. At Bloomsburg Area High School he was class president and lettered in six sports. After high school he enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, golf and church softball. In recent years many came across him playing poker at various locations in the Bloomsburg-Berwick area. He spent time as a basketball coach, a PIAA baseball umpire and a little league coach.
Surviving are his loving wife, the former Bonnie Snyder to whom he was married on June 17, 1978; two children, Mary Trapane and her husband Daniel, Berwick; and Carl Smoyer, Ephrata; two grandchildren, Evelyn and Nathaniel and one on the way; and several nieces and cousins.
His funeral will be held Tuesday, August 18, 2020, at 11am from Harman Funeral Homes & Crematory Inc. (West), 1265 Rock Glen Road, Rock Glen. Burial will follow in Harger's Cemetery, Bloomsburg. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday, from 10:00 am until the time of the service.
