Julio Miguel Velasco Jr., 67, died Tuesday morning, December 21, 2021, at the VA Medical Center, Wilkes Barre, following an extended illness.
Julio is survived by his wife Theany (Villar) Velasco; children Francesca Vazquez, and her husband Johnny, Long Island, NY; Diego Velasco, Bronx, NY; Haynes Velasco and his wife Melissa, Mount Pocono; Yarilis Velasco, Hazleton; and Theanny Velasco, Hazleton; three grandchildren Alexander and Andrew Vasquez and Oliver Velasco; and two sisters Marjorie Ceballos, Bronx, NY; and Maria Moreira and her husband Cesar, Bronx, NY. He was preceded in death by his father and mother Julio and Josefina (Santana) Velasco, Sr.
Julio was born in Guayaquil, Ecuador, on December 14, 1954. After immigrating to the United States, Julio split his time between New York City and Hazleton. Aside from his family, Julio's greatest devotion was to the US military. He was a 9/11 first responder and served a tour in the Iraq War with B Battery 258th Field Artillery, attaining the rank of Sergeant First Class. In addition to his military service, he was a Maintenance Technician for the US Postal Service, recently retiring after over 20 years of service.
His funeral will be held privately at the family's convenience with a Graveside Military Service in Indiantown Gap National Military Cemetery.
