John Roland Obituary

John E. "Jack" Roland, 84, of Sugarloaf, passed away peacefully October 5, 2021 at Providence Place Retirement Community, Drums.

Born in Hazleton, July 25, 1937, he was the son of the late Michael and Adele (Zukowski) Roland.

He was a 1955 graduate of West Hazleton High School. He later attended Penn State, Highacres where he earned a two-year Associate Degree in Drafting & Design Technology.  After employment with a number of firms, he returned to Penn State to obtain his Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering.  He continued his career with firms in Pittsburgh, Bethlehem, Wilkes Barre and Fairfield, NJ. He was a member of the Sierra Club, Audubon Society, the FFRF, and Penn State Alumni Association.

John treasured his independence and lived life on his own terms.  He enjoyed hiking, fishing, Alpine skiing, reading, listening to relaxing classical music, visiting new places and revisiting some old favorites, and simple pleasurable nature walks.  He had a deep appreciation for nature and all things connected to it.  He was always mindful of the environment.  Spirituality to him was defined by kindness and hospitality.

Surviving are his sister Edwina Genetti, Sugarloaf; nieces and nephews Venisa Ustynoski, Pensacola, FL.;  Christine Sheehy and her husband Mike, Pittsburgh, PA.; James Ustynoski, Asst. United States Attorney, Fort Lauderdale, FL.; Marie Tranguch and her husband Ben, Ashland, MA.; and Gina Morgan and her husband Matt, Simsbury, CT.; grandnieces and grandnephews; and several cousins.

A private celebration of his life will be held at the convenience of the family.

It was John's wish along with ours to say a special thank you to the nurses, doctors, and staff at Geisinger Hospital, Providence Place, and Bayada Hospice who treated him in a diligent, professional, and compassionate manner.
