John Flynn Obituary

John J. Flynn, son of the late John A. and Elizabeth B. (Zimmerman) Flynn passed away peacefully at the age of 89 on September 25, 2020 in Bellefonte, PA. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jean (McCluskey); his son, Sean and his wife, Marisa and granddaughter, Kaitlin (Kate) of State College, PA; a sister, Alice (Flynn) Cavallo of Piscataway, NJ and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, James and Eugene (Gene) as well as an infant son, John.

John was born in Hazleton and graduated from Hazleton High School. He served in the US Naval Reserve as a radio operator on the USS Turner DDE - R #834. John then enlisted in the US Army from 1953-1955 as a Morse Code Intercept Operator with the 302D Reconnaissance Battalion assigned to the Army Security Agency. After his military service John attended The Pennsylvania State University and Columbia University majoring in Electrical Engineering. He was employed by American Electric Power Service Corp in New York, NY in the Electrical Engineering Division - Protective Relaying and Communications Group and returned to Hazleton in 1967 to work for Barrett, Haentjens & Company, Inc (Hazleton Pumps) and after 25 years of service retired as their Plant Engineer. John was a member of The American Institute of Plant Engineers and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

John was a former member of: St. John Bosco RC Church of Sugarloaf, PA and St. Joseph Slovak RC Church and St. Gabriel’s RC Church of Hazleton. He will be interred at Calvary Cemetery, Drums, PA in a private ceremony.
