Janet Margaret Matyas, 86, of Mountain Grove, passed away February 21, 2022 at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, following a brief illness.
Born in Nuremberg, PA, May 17, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Richard and Margaret (Wanner) Lutz and spent the past 66 years in Mountain Grove.
Janet graduated from Nuremberg High School in 1953. At the age of 18, she sailed, by herself, across the Atlantic to marry her husband Ralph Errol Matyas on February 13,1954 where he was a member of the US Army stationed in Heilbronn, Germany. Once stateside, she worked at Kathy Fashions, Nuremberg for 15 years, and 10 years as an assistant at the post office in Rock Glen. Her longest and most fulfilling career was as a loving and dedicated homemaker, wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She enjoyed reading, traveling, and find-a-word and jigsaw puzzles. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Mountain Grove. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by her husband Ralph Errol Matyas, and her brother Eugene Lutz.
Surviving are her 4 children: Gary Matyas and his wife Marsha, Olney, MD; Deborah Barton and her husband William, Kokomo, IN; Douglas Matyas and his wife Nancy, Lovettsville, VA; and Linda Matyas, Mountain Grove. She had 6 grandchildren: Joseph, Amanda, Jason, Kendall, Nicholas, and Ella; 1 great grandson, Isaac; as well as several nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
Her funeral will be held Thursday, February 24, 2022 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1551 Rock Glen Road, Bloomsburg PA (Mountain Grove) at 2:00 PM. Burial will follow in Mountain Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at Trinity Lutheran Church, Mountain Grove, Thursday, February 24, 2022 from 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM. The family asks you to follow COVID precautions by wearing a mask to the church.
Memorial donations may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church in care of Mark Hartzell, 998 Beaver Valley Road, Bloomsburg, PA 17815. A tree will be planted in Janet's memory by her family at the church in the spring.
