George Robert Shanno

George Robert "Bob" Shanno, 82, of Conyngham, passed away Friday evening, September 1, 2023, at Providence Place Retirement Community in Drums, following a brief illness. 

 Born in Hazleton, May 5, 1941, he was the son of the late George E. and Mary (Grenfell) Shanno and spent the past 56 years in Conyngham, after moving from Hazleton. 

Bob graduated from Hazleton High School in 1959.  After high school he graduated from Dartmouth College with a Bachelor of Science degree. He also received several master's degrees from Lehigh University including a Master of Education and a Master of Arts in History.  George was a History Teacher for Hazleton Area School District for 40 years until his retirement in 2005. He was a member of Saint John Bosco RC Church, Sugarloaf, where he served as a lector for many years. 
 
 He was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by his brother David F. Shanno. 

 Surviving are two nephews, George Shanno and his wife Lucy, Portland, OR; and Ian Shanno, Las Vegas, NV; two great-nephews; and a sister-in-law, Kathie Shanno, Washington Crossing.

 His funeral will be held Thursday, at 10 AM with a Memorial Mass of Christian Burial in St. John Bosco RC Church, 573 Rt. 93, Sugarloaf. Interment will take place privately in Mountain View Cemetery, West Hazleton.  Friends may call at the church on Thursday morning from 9AM to 10AM. Harman Funeral Homes & Crematory Inc. (East), 669 W. Butler Drive, Drums is assisting the family with the arrangements.
