Eleanor G. Somits, 92, a resident of Mountain City Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, passed away Saturday January 2, 2021 at the facility.
Born in Hazleton, December 1, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Antonio and Mary (Wilson) Greco and was a life-long resident of the Hazleton area.
Eleanor attended Hazleton High School. Prior to her retirement, she was employed by the Standard-Speaker and previously worked as a Sewing Machine Operator in the local garment industry.
She was a member of St. Michael's Ukrainian Catholic Church, Hazleton. She generously volunteered at a few churches throughout her life. She was a member of the Third Order of St. Francis at Holy Dormition Monastery. Helping out at the Pilgrimage for World Peace every year was a favorite memory of hers.
Eleanor was best known for being an excellent seamstress and her passion for reading fiction novels. She also enjoyed cooking and baking. She made Christmas Eve Holy Supper and other holiday meals very special.
She was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by her husband, Michael Somits, Jr.; three sisters Ruth Conner, Louise Rohrbach, and Mary Landgraf; and two brothers Frank and Anthony Greco.
Surviving are her daughter Loretta Sepnefski and her husband Daniel, West Hazleton; a son Mark Somits, Glenmoore; a daughter-in-law Luba Somits, West Chester; six grandchildren Matthew Sr. and Nathan Sepnefski, Natalie Domogauer and her husband John, Christa Creighton and her husband Tom, Catherine and Mark Somits; five great-grandchildren Timothy Mumaw, Matthew Sepnefski, Jr., David and Leon Harris, and Olivia Creighton; and several nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held at the convenience of the family at a later date. Donations may be made in her memory to Hazleton Area Public Library at www.hazletonlibrary.org; St. Michael's Ukrainian Catholic Church, 72 N Laurel St, Hazleton, PA 18201; or the charity of the donor's choice.
