Celestine Pekala of Nuremberg, passed away Friday morning, December 31, 2021 at her residence.
Born in Nuremberg, November 22, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Mary (Daldon) Longo and lived in the Nuremberg area her entire life.
A graduate of Bloomsburg University, she was an English teacher in the Hazleton Area School District for 35 years before her retirement in 1984.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Weston and belonged to the Alter and Rosary Society of the parish.
Celestine was a member of the Pennsylvania State Education Association and the PSEA Retired Organization of Schuylkill County, the Bloomsburg University Foundation, and the Bloomsburg Alumni Association, where she took an active role. She was also a member of the Tirolisi Alpini of Hazleton.
Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were her husband Lawrence, who died in 1996, a brother Thomas Longo, who was killed in a hunting accident in 1953, a brother Joseph Longo in 2002, and a sister Lucille Longo in 2008.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, and is survived by nieces and nephews.
Her funeral will be held Friday at 9:30 am from Harman Funeral Homes & Crematory Inc. (West) 1265 Rock Glen Road, Rock Glen, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am in Sacred Heart RC Church, Weston. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's RC Cemetery, Sheppton. Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday evening 6-8 pm. A Christian Wake Service will be held Thursday evening.
