Carol Chyko Obituary

Carol A. Chyko, 77, formerly of Mt. Grove, passed away Sunday morning, March 19, 2023, at the residence of her daughter in Bloomsburg, following a 17-year battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease).  Carol had a very deep faith and relationship with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  She was always singing praises with her favorite being "Hallelujah".  How exciting to know that this will all continue in her new life for eternity.

Born in Brooklyn, NY, January 31, 1946, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Helen (Gembecki) Olszewski and had spent the past 14 years in Bloomsburg after moving from Mt. Grove where she had lived since 1974.

Carol was a salesclerk for Dress Barn and had previously been employed at Zayres/Ames, all of which were in the Laurel Mall, Hazle Twp.  Prior to her employment in retail, she had worked at Stewart's Root Beer Drive-In, Sugarloaf Twp.

Carol was a member of Journeymate Wesleyan Church, Lightstreet; and had previously attended St. John Bosco RC Church, Sugarloaf, where she was a kindergarten CCD teacher.  Carol was past president and member of the Twin County Lionesses, and the Nuremberg Elementary PTA.  She was a co-leader of the Nuremberg Girl Scouts and volunteered with the Valley Chief Cheerleaders.

Carol enjoyed canning, had a "green thumb" for gardening and cared for many indoor and outdoor plants.  She loved making crafts and attending craft shows.  She cherished going to Broadway plays, and sightseeing around Manhattan, where she worked after she graduated high school.  She adored going on trips to the beach with her family to Ocean City, Maryland.  Her absolute biggest joy in life was her family, who described her as infectiously inspiring, outgoing, optimistically supportive, and always volunteering to lend a helping hand.

She was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by a brother, Donald Olszewski, and her former husband, Stephen A. Chyko.

Surviving are three children, her caregiver of 17 years, Deb Kile and her husband Myron, Bloomsburg; Stephen P. Chyko and his wife Anna, Hazleton; and John Chyko, Sugarloaf Twp.; four grandchildren, Shawna, Alivia, Kyle, and Elizabeth; three step-grandchildren, Ashley, Julia, and Ryan; two great-grandchildren, Quinn and Adonis; one step-great-granddaughter, Penelope; a daughter-in-law, Jaime Chyko, Conyngham; and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Carol's life will be held Saturday, April 1, 2023, at 11 AM in Journeymate Wesleyan Church, 1700 Main Street in Lightstreet, Bloomsburg, PA 17815.  Friends may call at the church on Saturday morning from 10 AM until the time of the service.  Harman Funeral Homes & Crematory, Inc. (West), 1265 Rock Glen Road, Rock Glen, assisted the family with the arrangements.

Carol's family would like to give special thanks to all the doctors, practitioners, professionals, nurses, aides, family, and friends who helped give Carol the exceptional care she received during her lengthy battle with ALS.
