Michael J. McHugh, Sr. 94 of White Haven passed away Wednesday morning at Mt. Top Senior Care, Mt. Top.
Born in Wilkes-Barre, August 22, 1922, he was the son of the late Joseph A. McHugh, Sr. and Mary C. (Strish) McHugh.
He was a member of St. Patrick’s R. C. Church, White Haven. Prior to moving to White Haven, he established a funeral home in Wilkes-Barre, then operated a funeral home in White Haven since 1962 and opened a branch office in Freeland in 1977 and retired from funeral service in 1985. Michael served in the US Navy as a pharmacist during WWII in the Pacific Theatre and was awarded campaign ribbons for the American, Asiatic and Pacific campaigns.
Returning from the Navy he attended Eckles Collage of Mortuary Science, Philadelphia where he was a member of Lambda Zeta Nu, Honorary Scholastic Fraternity, Alpha Chapter, Philadelphia. A longtime member of the White Haven Lions Club, he served as President from 1976-1977 and 1978-1980, Zone Chairman 1976-1977 and was Deputy District Governor of District 14H. He was a charter and longtime member of the VFW post 5010, Freeland, a member of the American Legion, White Haven post 592. Mike was a member of the International Federation of Thanatologist Association, the Luzerne County Funeral Directors Association, and the National Funeral Directors Association. He served for many years on the Board of Directors of LFDA, and was a delegate for many State and National funeral conventions.
He was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by a sister Elizabeth (Betty) Sharon, and a brother Joseph McHugh, Jr.
Surviving are his wife of 45 years, the former Barbara A. Radjavitch, son Michael J. McHugh, Jr. Shrewsbury, PA; stepsons Dean and Ryan Raudenbush, both of White Haven; a sister Maureen Haycock and her husband William, Cherry Hill, NJ; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
His funeral will be held Monday at 10:00am with a Memorial Mass of Christian Burial in St. Patrick’s R.C. Church, 411 Allegheny St., White Haven, PA 18661, and internment will follow in the parish cemetery.
