Joseph D. Yocum, 91, of Drums, passed away Friday, February 8, 2019 at Lehigh Valley Hospital - Hazleton, following a short illness.
Born in Hazleton, January 23, 1928, he was the son of the late Delroy and Verna (Medvitz) Yocum and spent the past 30 years in Drums, Pennsylvania after moving from Hazleton.
Joseph had worked at Hazleton State General Hospital, as a Nursing Assistant, became an EKG Technician and then an Echocardiograph Technician. He retired from Hazleton General Hospital after 50 years of service. He was a US Army veteran of WWII. He was a member of SS. Cyril & Methodius Parish at the Church of St. Joseph, Hazleton, where he had served as a Eucharistic Minister and usher and was a member of the Holy Name Society. He enjoyed fishing, his family, his pet cats, and doing puzzles.
He was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by his wife, the former Mary Shindick, who passed away January 23, 2014; and a daughter Mary Yocum, May 8, 2017.
Surviving are five children, Joseph and his wife Susan, Hazleton; Clare Sharp and her husband James, Drums; Anne Usiak and her husband Maurice, Drums; Paula Yocum-Lalicata, Drums; and James and his wife Agnella, Hazle Township; five grandchildren Alanna, Gina and Donna Yocum, Joshua Ulshafer and Vincent Lalicata, Jr.; one niece; and three nephews.
His funeral will be held Thursday February 14, 2019 at 9:30 am from Harman Funeral Homes & Crematory Inc. (East) 669 W. Butler Drive, Drums, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am in SS. Cyril and Methodius Parish at the Church of St. Joseph's Church, 604 N. Laurel St. Hazleton. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Drums. Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday evening 6-8 pm. A Christian Wake Service will be held Wednesday evening.
