John C. “Jack” Wittig, 70, of Sugarloaf, passed away Friday evening at his home, surrounded by his loving family, following a two-year illness.
Born in Hazleton, August 23, 1947, he was the son of the late Conrad J. and Marie (Antonelli) Wittig, and was raised in West Hazleton. He spent the past 32 years in Sugarloaf after moving from Conyngham.
Jack had worked as the Engineering and Sales Manager for Bear Ridge Machine and Fabrication Inc. Frackville. He served as Vice Chairman of the Sugarloaf Township Supervisors, Chairman of the Sugarloaf Township Planning Commission, and Chairman of the Conyngham-Sugarloaf Joint Municipal Authority.
He was a member of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, Conyngham and the Hazle-Azalea Fellowship Lodge #327, F & A Masons. He enjoyed hunting and was a member of the Arrowhead Rod and Gun Club. He especially enjoyed fishing with his beloved grandsons and attending their baseball and basketball games. He was an avid Penn State fan, and enjoyed tending to the grounds around his home.
Surviving are his wife, the former Lana Ervin, to whom he was married on June 17, 1972; a daughter Danielle Mariano and her husband Edward, Hazleton; two grandsons Jack and Max Mariano; a sister Julie Bazewicz and her husband Jerry, Southport, NC; two nieces Jan and Jodi Bazewicz; a nephew Jared Bazewicz; and a brother-in-law Larry Ervin, Rock Glen.
His funeral will be held Tuesday at 10:30 am from Harman Funeral Homes & Crematory Inc. (East) 669 W. Butler Drive, Drums, followed by continued services at 11 am in Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, 467 Main Street, Conyngham. Burial will follow in Conyngham Union Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Monday evening 6-9 pm.
