James I. Marsyada, Sr.

James I. Marsyada, Sr. 74, of Four Seasons Court, Hazle Township, passed away unexpectedly Sunday evening at Hazleton General Hospital, Hazleton.

Born in Hazleton on June 10, 1936, he was the son of the late George A. and Loretta M. (Hutton) Marsyada, and spent the past 14 years in Hazle Township after moving from West Hazleton.

He was a retired Foreman for the West Hazleton Boro Streets Department where he worked for 12 years, and also was employed at Spaulding Bakery, Inc. and the Pennsylvania Fish Commission.

He was a member of St. Peter and Paul’s Polish National Catholic Church, McAdoo.  James was a 1955 graduate of West Hazleton High School.  He was also a U.S. Navy Veteran, serving on the U.S.S. Saratoga, and was also a Life Member of the West Hazleton VFW Post #8253.  James was a past member of the Pulaski Club, West Hazleton and the Sugarloaf Fire Company.  He enjoyed hunting and fishing.  He especially enjoyed football and was an avid New York Giants fan.

He was preceded in death in addition to his parents by a son, James I. Jr. and his former wife Bernice (Olenick) Marsyada, who both passed away March 22, 1999.

Surviving are his wife of the past 22 years, the former Jean Walck, four children, Bonita Larock and her husband Russell, Hazleton; Lisa Culp and her husband Clarence, Drums; Cynthia Sydlo and her husband Joseph, Mt. Juliet, TN; Keith and his companion Crystal Quinn, Hazleton; four step-children, Patricia Rosato and her husband Dominic, Hazleton; Michael Gallucci and his wife Laurie, Lacey, WA; Sandra Gallucci and her companion Butch Guth, Tresckow; Joseph Gallucci and his companion Christiana Ferraro, New Jersey; ten grandchildren, Katrina and Jonathan Larock; Nicole, Travis, and Carissa Culp; Celina,  Joseph, and Benjamin Sydlo; Cody Marsyada, and Zandar Marsyada; seven step-grandchildren, Noelle and Joel Chaban; Brian and Katie Gallucci; Jessica DeLessio and her companion Joshua Michaels; Davey DeLessio; and Rowan Gallucci; two great-grandchildren, Adrienn Lynn Culp and Serenity Nevaeh Larock; two step great-grandchildren, Joshua Michaels and Aleea Chaban; and a sister Beverly Schell and her husband Earl, Sugarloaf.

His funeral will be held Thursday at 10:00 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Peter and Paul’s Polish National Catholic Church, 46 East Adams Street, McAdoo.  Interment will follow in Drums Community Cemetery, W. Butler Dr. Drums.  Friends may call at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Hazleton Animal Shelter, 101 N. Poplar Street, Hazleton, Pennsylvania 18201.
