Mildred “Millie” Cancerius  

Mildred “Millie” Cancerius, 91, formerly of West Hazleton, and a resident of Fritzingertown Senior Living Community, Drums for the past 7 months, ended her journey in this life and went to be with the Lord Sunday morning at the facility.  

Born in Tomhicken, April 27, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Radona and Julia (Liska) Bakich.  Prior to residing at Fritzingertown, she had lived in West Hazleton for 50 years.  She had also previously resided in McAdoo and Hazleton.  

Millie had been employed as a trimmer and buck presser in the local garment industry and was a member of the ILGWU.  She was also a homemaker who was well known for her baked goods and loved to crochet.  

She was a member of West Hazleton Trinity Lutheran Church, where she was active with many church organizations; the Ladies Auxiliary of the West Hazleton VFW; and the West Hazleton Senior Citizens.  

She was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by her husband Ervin W. Cancerius, who passed away in 1982; brothers Peter and William Bakich; and a sister Mary Litostansky.  

Surviving are a daughter Millie Beach and her husband James, Hazleton; a son Carl Cancerius and his wife Susan, West Hazleton; two grandchildren Megan and Shawn Cancerius; two brothers Blazo Bakich and his wife Florence, Belvedere, NJ; and Michael Bakich and his wife Margaret, Hazleton; a sister Helen Sterenchak and her husband John, Hazle Township; and several nieces and nephews.  

Her funeral will be held privately at the convenience of the family with a graveside service in Mt. View Cemetery, West Hazleton.  Her pastor, the Rev. Thomas N Cvammen will officiate the service.  There will be no public viewing.

Adeline J. Pongratz  

Adeline J. Pongratz, 94, formerly of Weston, and a resident of Orangeville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the past four years, passed away Saturday morning at the facility.  

Born in Derringer, April 24, 1915 , she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Bartholdi) Genetti.  Prior to residing at Orangeville, she had been a resident of Weston for 48 years.  

Mrs. Pongratz was a homemaker for most of her life, but during WWII she had worked as a welder at American Car & Foundry (AC&F), Berwick.  She was a member of Sacred Heart RC Church, Weston, and enjoyed sewing and quilting.  

She was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by her husband Michael G. Pongratz, who passed away in 1973; and a brother Frank Genetti.  

Surviving are a daughter Elaine Pongratz and her husband Michael DeMarco, Bloomsburg.  

Her funeral will be held Thursday at 10:30 am with a Memorial Mass of Christian Burial in Sacred Heart RC Church, Weston.  Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.  Friends may call at the church Thursday morning from 9:30 am until the time of the Mass.  

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial contributions to the Activity Fund of Orangeville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center , 200 Berwick Road , Orangeville , PA 17859 .

Hilda Margle

Hilda M. Margle, 95, of Hazlewood Apts., Hazleton, and formerly of Weston, passed away Sunday morning at St. Luke Pavilion, Hazleton following a 10 month illness.

Born in Weston on August 21, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Beulah (Hern) Widitz Schreibmaier, and spent most of her life in Weston.

She was a member of Conyngham Valley Bible Church, Conyngham.  Hilda had been employed as a floor lady for Fern Glen Factory, having retired in 1974.  She was a member of the Oneida and Nuremberg Senior Citizens and the Nuremberg Quilting Club.   Hilda’s family will always have fond memories of her making her beautiful quilts and Christmas ornaments. 

Hilda, always the “social butterfly”, enjoyed playing cards with her friends and her family.  She was also an avid bowler and loved traveling.  One of her favorite pastimes was watching and cheering on her favorite Philadelphia teams, the 76ers and the Phillies.  She will lovingly be remembered as having a huge sweet tooth, particularly her love for chocolate.

She was preceded in death in addition to her parents by her husband Stephen, who passed away 1967, a grandson, Earl Stephen Myers, 1964, a sister Elizabeth Schreibmaier, and brothers Anthony and Aloysus Schreibmaier.

Surviving are three daughters, Dolores Kowalick and her husband Stephen, Allentown; Linda Morgan and her husband Edgar, Sugarloaf; Barbara Myers and her husband Earl, Hernando, FL; 10 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-great-grandchildren.

Her funeral will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. from the Harman Funeral Homes and Crematory, Inc. (West) 1265 Rock Glen Road, Rock Glen.  Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Weston.  Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday evening from 5-8 p.m. and Monday morning from 9:30 until the time of service.

Isabell V. “Angie” Cymbala  

Isabell V. “Angie” Cymbala, 86, of Beaver Valley Road, Bloomsburg, passed away Saturday morning at her home following a brief illness.  

Born in Bloomsburg, March 5, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Martin and Barbara (Koslofsky) Bolinsky and spent her entire live in Beaver Township.  

She was the retired proprietor of Angie’s Café, Mahanoy City for 12 years and had worked in many local garment factories.   

She was a member of Sacred Heart RC Church, Weston and the Beaver Township Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary.  Angie enjoyed trips to the casinos where she loved to play the slots.  

She was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by three brothers Bernard “Brownie”, Alfonso, and Stanley Bolinsky; and four sisters Helen Pelley, Mary Merook, Florence Merook, and Mildred Bolinsky.  

Surviving are two children, Barbara Karmonick, Nescopeck; and David Cymbala and his wife Cindy, Beaver Township; five grandchildren Brenda Karmonick, Sonya Moran and her husband George, Rob Karmonick and his friend Craig, Alicia Cymbala and her husband Lucas, and Michael Cymbala and his friend Ryann; three great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.  

Her funeral will be held Tuesday at 10 am from Harman Funeral Homes & Crematory Inc. (West) 1265 Rock Glen Road, Rock Glen followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am in Sacred Heart RC Church, Weston.  Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.  Friends may call Monday evening 6-9 pm.  A Christian Wake Service will be held Monday evening at 8:30 pm.

Grace M. “Grayce” Swet

Grace M. “Grayce” Swet, 85, of Hazleton Apartments, Hazleton, passed away early Friday morning at Smith Health Care Center, Mountaintop following a short illness.

Born in Pardeesville on October 31, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Dominick and Anna (Mechinus) Kinney, and resided all her life in Hazleton.

She had been a homemaker most of her life, but she also worked as a waitress at the former Lucia’s and later Lenny’s LA Café, Alter Street, for 20 years prior to retiring in the 1980’s.

Grayce is best remembered by her love of art, for which she is known as “Grayce”.  She began painting at the Hazleton Art League in the late 1950’s and during this time had numerous showings and awards.  Later on, she painted for many years with Tim Weaver of Drums. 

Over the years, her art work was displayed throughout the Hazleton area in oil paintings, water colors, and other medias.

She was preceded in death in addition to her parents by her husband Stanley, who passed away in 1987; two brothers Salvadore Kinney, who was killed while serving with the U.S. Marine Corp. during the Korean War in 1953; and Nunzio Kinney, 1999; and a sister Ida Kimock, 2009.

Surviving are a son Richard Swet and his wife Carlise, Enumclaw, WA; a daughter Joan A. Stroud and her husband Jody, Drums; four grandsons Levi, Beau, Maxwell, and Micah Swet, Enumclaw, WA; two granddaughters, Jill Dorneman and her husband Robert, Coplay; Judi Yanochko and her husband Joseph III, Drums; two great grandchildren, Abby and James Dorneman, Copley; a sister Ann Barkus, Hazleton; several nieces and nephews, and longtime companion Carl Meister, Hazleton.  Grayce had a dedicated love for her family and close friends and will be missed.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Gathering will be held Sunday, March 28th at 2 pm in Lobitz Safari Room.  Friends and family are invited to come share stories and memories, and celebrate her life. A dinner will follow.  Those planning to attend can RSVP with her daughter Joni Stroud at 788-4013 by March 18th.

Edward L. Eisenman  

Edward L. Eisenman, 85, formerly of Weston and a resident of Butler Valley Manor, Drums, passed away Saturday afternoon at Hazleton General Hospital , following a brief illness.  

Born in Weston, July 23, 1924 , he was the son of the late Edward L. and Catherine (Turnbach) Eisenman.  He spent the past year and a half in Butler Valley Manor after residing most of his life in Weston.  

He was a retired Weaver in local textile mills.  He was a member of Emmanuel United Church of Christ, Nuremberg .  He enjoyed gardening and walking.  

He was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by brothers Victor, Lloyd, and Claude Steiner, and Garfield Eisenman; and sisters Rita Schmoyer, Esther Bishop, and Evelyn Hoffman.  

Surviving are several nieces and nephews including Debbie Hower and her husband Dennis, Weston; Edward Hoffman and his wife Leslie, Nuremberg; and Barbara Vonada, Williamsport; and 6 great nephews and 4 great nieces who reside locally.  

His funeral will be held Tuesday at 10 am from Harman Funeral Homes & Crematory Inc. (West) 1265 Rock Glen Road, Rock Glen, with his pastor the Rev. Louis Aita officiating.  Burial will follow in Nuremberg Cemetery .  Friends may call at the funeral home Monday evening 7-9 pm .

George F. “Junior” Stefanick

George F. “Junior” Stefanick, 86, of Freeland, passed away Wednesday morning at Mountain City Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Hazleton.

Born in Highland on February 17, 1924, he was the son of the late Andrew and Ann (Sumerdak) Stefanick and resided most of his life in the Freeland area.

He had been employed at the former General Foam Corporation for 30 years, having retired in 1989.

He was also a member of Immaculate Conception R.C. Church, Freeland.

Junior was also a WWII U.S. Army Veteran, and a life member of the Freeland VFW.  He loved to do work around his home, and also enjoyed hunting for many years.

He was preceded in death in addition to his parents by his wife Regina (Moro) Stefanick, who passed away November 7, 2006 after 59 ¾ years of marriage; a grandson, Matthew Olenick in 1999; brothers John “Chip”, Joseph “Piney”, and Stephen “PeeWee” Stefanick; and sisters Mary Brindock, Helen McCarro, and Margaret “Margie” Iben.

Surviving are a son George J. and his wife Lucille, Freeland; a daughter Geraldine “Gerry” Olenick and her husband Robert “Bob” Olenick, Sugarloaf; grandsons Brian Olenick and his wife Emily, Spring Grove; Jeffrey Stefanick, West Chester, PA; granddaughter Kimberly Stefanick and her fiancée Brad Rogers, West Hazleton; one great-grandson Ethan Olenick, Spring Grove; a sister Pauline Stefanick, Freeland, and many nieces and nephews.

His funeral will be held Saturday at 11:15 a.m. from the Harman Funeral Homes and Crematory, Inc. (East) 669 W. Butler Drive, Drums followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 12 noon in Immaculate Conception R.C. Church, Centre St. Freeland.  Burial will follow in Calvary Cemeter, Drums.  Friends may call at the funeral home Friday evening from 6-8 p.m.

Robert J. Flaim  

Robert J. Flaim, 66, of Old Forest Road, Conyngham, passed away early Sunday morning at Hazleton General Hospital, following a lengthy illness.  

Born in West Hazleton, July 19, 1943, he was the son of the late David V. and Mary K. (Smith) Flaim.  He spent the past eight years in Conyngham after moving from Hazleton and had also lived in New York.  

He was a retired Construction Worker.  He was a member of Holy Annunciation RC Parish at St. Gabriel’s RC Church, Hazleton and was a Third Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council #442, Hazleton.  Robert loved to sing and play guitar.  

He was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by a sister Janet Jones.  

Surviving are five brothers and sisters, William P., Drums; David and his wife Anna Mae, West Babylon, NY; Patricia Sprague and her husband Robert, Bloomington, NY; Donald J., Port St. Lucie, FL; and Marie Cunniffe and her husband David, Ronkonkoma, NY; his companion of many years Maria Johnston, Conyngham; her children Robert Johnston and his wife Hallie, Erie; and David Johnston, Conyngham; her grandchildren, Pierce and Remley Johnston; and many nieces and nephews.

His funeral will be held Thursday at 9:15 am from Harman Funeral Homes & Crematory Inc. (East) 669 W. Butler Drive, Drums followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am in St. Gabriel’s RC Church, 122 S. Wyoming St., Hazleton.  Burial will follow in Sacred Heart RC Cemetery, Weston.  Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday evening 7-9 pm.  A Christian Wake Service will be held Wednesday evening.
